Does My Baby Have RSV?

During the fall and winter seasons, there are so many different illnesses circulating around that have the potential to make your children very sick. Included in that list is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

Anyone can get RSV, but it is especially dangerous in vulnerable populations like infants and older adults. If your child is experiencing a cough and a runny nose, keep an eye out for any worsening symptoms that may indicate an RSV infection.

Want to learn more about the condition? Read on for the details from our AFC Urgent Care Cleveland team.

What Is RSV?

RSV is a respiratory virus that affects the lungs and breathing passageways. It can start with mild, cold-like symptoms but then can progress all the way to trouble breathing and the development of bronchiolitis, which is the inflammation of the tiny passages in the lungs.

That is why it is especially important to keep an eye on your infant if you start to notice any coughing or wheezing. An infant’s airways are much smaller than an adult’s, and it can be particularly dangerous if they become inflamed.

Severe RSV Risk Factors

  • Premature infants
  • Children under 6 months of age
  • Anyone with neuromuscular disorders
  • Those with weakened immune systems

When Should I Bring My Child for Medical Attention?

It can be scary when your small child starts to display signs of illness! As parents, you know your child best and you know when he or she is not acting right, but certain symptoms should prompt an immediate trip to see us.

Any time you notice your child has lips or skin turning a bluish or gray color, is having trouble breathing or is breathing short and shallow, or is having trouble drinking or sleeping like normal, it is always recommended to seek medical attention. It’s best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your children!

Preventing the Spread of RSV

  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid kissing your baby on the face if you feel unwell.
  • Wash your hands often.
