Is Sunscreen the Only Way I Can Protect Against Skin Cancer?- AFC Urgent Care

Got sunscreen? While applying sunscreen is a wonderful way to protect your skin from skin cancer, it isn't the only way you can play it safe when having fun in the summer sun. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Cleveland wants you to be aware of other ways you can protect your skin when out and about this summer.

What Type of Sunscreen Should I Wear?

The American Cancer Society states that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Therefore, it is certainly a cancer we all need to focus on preventing, especially during the warmer months when we are outside more. Sunscreen is one of the most important ways to protect your skin this summer. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing Sunscreen

  • Is this sunscreen for my child?
  • Do I have allergies, acne or rosacea-prone skin?
  • Do I have dry skin?
  • Do I tan or burn easily?
  • Will I be swimming or getting wet?

Is Sunscreen the Only Action I Should Take Against Skin Cancer?

While sunscreen is definitely vital in reducing your risk of skin cancer, there are other ways you can protect your skin when out in the sun.

Ways to Prevent Skin Cancer

  • Stay in the shade between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
  • Wear light, reflective clothing.
  • Wear sunglasses that have UVA and/or UVB protection.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head, neck and ears.
  • Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to areas like the ears, eyelids, hands and feet.
  • Consider sitting under an umbrella or other shade in the sun.
