Improve Your Heart Health Whether we’re in exceptional or poor health, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to caring for our hearts. Discover how to keep your heart pumping for years to come with these tips. Make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep every day. Experts recommend that American adults get between seven and nine hours each night for healthy arteries and improved heart health. You also want to keep your blood pressure numbers within the normal range—less than 120⁄80. Blood pressure should be checked at every doctor’s visit. However, if you’re one of the lucky ones who never get sick, be sure to at least have your blood pressure checked annually at your wellness visit. If your blood pressure is ever high, or if you want to be sure to keep it in check, limit your salt intake and stress levels, while also improving your eating habits by including more fruits and vegetables and lean protein in your diet. Don’t forget to exercise most days of the week for at least 30 minutes to keep your heart beating strong. If needed, break it up in three 10-minute or two 15-minute workouts. Remember, working out doesn’t have to be strenuous. Take Fido for a walk around the neighborhood, grab a friend and go for a walk on the Greenway, or take a hike through the Cherokee National Forest.
